The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
