The Year 2026 Hailed as the Age of the Croaking Craze.
While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Considering a band of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are staking their claim.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Amphibians have been far from new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. But, their visibility has seemingly increased in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are serious Frog Games.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To quantify this phenomenon, I undertook a detailed review into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results tell a compelling story: a steady increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat apparent elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming appears especially strong.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
In my opinion, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs have built-in appealing traits for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities enable a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.
Many of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.
If these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be entering a true frog gaming renaissance.
