We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical body horror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about our choices in loving each other.
A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love
Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The story starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the country for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.
The couple face the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Allegory and Meaning
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
